Fall is the Dahlia’s turn to shine. Magnificent dinner-plate size blooms brave the rains and impending cooler weather. They signal the end of summer and are a welcome sight as the rest of the garden starts to fade and curl into themselves to get ready to hibernate for the winter. Come and visit for a while, take your shoes off and wander in my garden with your favorite beverage. Ponder the dahlia’s multi-petaled intricate beauty. Leave your worries behind for a moment and breathe..
I live in Gardening Zone 6, dahlias are hardy at zone 8 – 11. This means the tubers will not survive overwintering in the ground in my climate. When the blooms are done and the foliage has faded, I dig up the tubers and and air dry them out of the sun,. They then overwinter in my basement in a ventilated box or paper bag until spring.
